John Shepherd is not used to being a minority, but things have been different for him ever since he moved to Wyrdham. He was dismayed to learn there are no churches in the town, that the town founders were witches, and that all the children are raised to "worship demons." So John has decided to "put on the Armor of Christ" and "exorcise" the "unholy abomination" that is Hobb's Tree, carving Christ's name and symbol into its trunk. John delights in knowing he has rattled the entire community to its core by doing this; he thinks he has truly done "the Lord's work." But when he returns home from committing this blasphemy, John thinks he hears hoofbeats on his roof. He thinks he sees a satyr outside his bedroom window. Someone even sneaks inside and turns all of his crosses upside down throughout the house. John has drawn down the wrath of Robin Goodfellow, who wants compensation for what was done to his tree. And none of John's prayers to Jesus will be answered tonight...
